Cool Schools: Using games as learning incentive

A new kind of cool is at Grissom Middle School in Mishawaka. Administrators have created an incentive program for students who make good grades.

The school has a Club Honors Room that is all new this year. The room is filled with board games, PlayStation 3's, and air hockey just to name a few.

“I really like coming in here. It’s nice to come in here and get a more relaxed place but at the same time it’s fun,” said Kaylee Whitney who is an 8th Grader.

Students who make a 3.0 GPA or higher have access to the room during lunchtime. Students are allowed to eat their lunch first and use the remainder of the time to play in the game room.

"It’s nice to have this option of escape. The competitiveness in here is fun," said 8th grade Student Maria Mccomish.

Administrators hope by giving positive rewards for good behavior, the students will take that with them in life.

“Hopefully when they get out there in the real-world they continue to make these choices because they’re used to the rewards,” Club Honors Supervisor Brandy Todd.
