SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Demolition of South Bend’s Wooden Indian Motel is underway.
Crews began tearing down the 55-room motel on Thursday.
Indiana University South Bend bought the property in February. The university plans to turn it into a green space to make the area more welcoming and safe.
However, a spokesperson says the school will study possible future uses like business development and future campus needs.
In a Facebook post, many people said they support the demolition.
One user wrote, “It is about time.” Another said, “Can’t be gone soon enough.” A third person added, “I’m doing a happy dance.
The motel had many issues, like crime and drug activity, over the years. In 2007, a South Bend police officer was shot and killed when responding to a call at the motel.
