GOSHEN, Ind. – On Saturday, volunteers got together in Goshen to participate in the annual Michiana Out of the Darkness Community Walk, an event aimed at raising awareness and preventing suicide.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the organization that the volunteers were supporting. It is the organization’s goal to lower the suicide rate by 20% over the next five years.
Similar walks are held around the country, and it was estimated that over a quarter of a million people participated in them. $21 million was raised by the organization last year for suicide prevention.
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.
