Deputies in Cass County rescue 8-year-old submerged in water

CASS COUNTY, Mich. – Deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Arthur Dodd Memorial Park on Saturday in response to a water rescue call involving an 8-year-old male.

Officials say when deputies arrived on the scene they located the 8-year-old 20 feet from shore hanging on to a submerged tree in fast moving water.

Rescue personnel entered the water and safely rescued the juvenile.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the young boy and his mother were kayaking down the Dowagiac River when the juvenile’s kayak was upended by high water levels and fast currents.

It was confirmed that personal flotation devices approved by the U.S. Coast Guard were used at the time of the incident.

The juvenile was transported to the hospital via ambulance for treatment of minor injuries.
