Driver suspected of DUI after crashing into river from boat launch

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Police Department reports officers responded to the boat launch/dead end at Vistula and Beech Roads in Osceola for reports of a vehicle in the St. Joseph River around 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

Police arrived and were flagged down by two people who appeared to be soaking wet.

The two told the officers they were the ones in the vehicle, and they were uninjured.

Authorities' investigation determined a black Chrysler 200 was traveling at a high rate of speed, missed the dead-end signage, and drove into the river.

The two occupants were then able to get themselves out and call for help.

Members of the St. Joseph County Police Dive Team arrived and secured the vehicle for the tow company.

The driver was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI, Minor Consuming an Alcoholic Beverage, and Operator Never Licensed.

The passenger was also cited for Minor Consuming an Alcoholic Beverage and released.
