SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Both sides of the political aisle hosted separate Dyngus Day celebrations Monday, marking the unofficial start of the political season.

Dyngus Day, a Polish holiday that gained prominence in South Bend in the 1950s, has become a chance for local and state candidates to share their campaign messages and interact with the public.

The West Side Democratic Club, which has been leading Dyngus Day events since 1929, hosted inside the M.R. Falcons building after a pipe burst forced them to move their celebrations.

This year also marks the M.R. Falcons first celebration in 12 years.

St. Joesph County Young Republicans hosted their celebration at Allie’s Cafe, and featured a number of speakers, including Secretary of State, Diego Morales.

Both sides of the aisle, pushing for higher voter participation after St. Joe County finished last in the state in turnout during the 2022 election.

If you’d like to register to vote, the deadline for the May 5th primary, is 11:59 p.m. tonight.
