SOUTH BEND, Ind.—Photographs of the late Billy “Stix” Nicks, a local drummer, were added to the IU South Bend’s Civil Rights Heritage Center’s Small Collection last year.

The collection reveals moments of Nicks’ life and long musical career and is available digitally in the Center's online archive

A native of South Bend, Nicks graduated from Central High School and followed his passion for drumming.

He formed the band, Billy ‘Stix’ Nicks and the ‘Rhythm Rockers,’ in 1954 and joined the world of Motown.

Nicks also served in the Army and taught music lessons throughout much of Michiana.

Following a battle with cancer, Nicks passed away in November 2017.
