Elkhart County Commissioners declare local emergency

ABC57

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Commissioners officially declared a local emergency as of 11:15 a.m., Monday, due to winter weather conditions.

Officials say this follows Indiana Gov. Mike Braun's state-level emergency declaration and the state’s inclusion in the federal disaster declaration related to the ongoing winter storm system.

Elkhart County officials say this declaration helps the county recover costs incurred from emergency operations, like overtime for road crews and first responders working extended hours.

Officials added the local emergency doesn't change the current travel status. The county remains under a Travel Watch.

Residents are encouraged to stay home, if possible, but drive cautiously if you must go out.
