Elkhart County investigators issue warning about 'spoofing' scam

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. - The Elkhart County sheriff's department is warning people not to fall for a phone scam!

Investigators say scammers are using a method called "spoofing.” That allows scammers to display the sheriff's department's actual phone number on your caller ID.

The caller claims they're from the sheriff's department.

They tell the victim they missed jury duty and have warrants out for their arrest.

The caller tells the victim to buy i-Tunes gift cards to pay the court fees.

Investigators say at least two people have fallen victim to this scam.
