Elkhart County woman found guilty of OWI in hit-and-run crash

Jamie Reschly

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Court documents from Elkhart County reveal 45-year-old Jamie Reschly was found guilty during a jury trial on Aug. 15 for Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated: Endangering a Person-Prior Within 7 Yr, a Level 6 Felony, Operating a Vehicle with an ACE of .15 or More but where def. has a prior conviction, a Level 6 Felony, and Failure to Remain at the Scene of an Accident, a Misdemeanor.

The charges stemmed from a crash which happened on Oct. 9, 2024, in Goshen. Reschly is due to be sentenced on Sept. 2.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to a residence in the 57000 block of S.R. 15 around 8:40 a.m. on Oct. 9, 2024, for a reported property damage crash where the driver of a white Ford Explorer, later identified as Reschly, had fled the scene.

The 911 caller was able to provide a license plate number which was found to be registered to Reschly.

Authorities then attempted to call Reschly several times with no answer. Law enforcement then arrived at Reschly's home.

Deputies informed her that her vehicle had been involved in crash and asked if she knew anything about it. Reschly stated she wasn't involved in a crash.

Authorities say while speaking with her they could smell a strong odor of alcohol from her breath, plus her speech was slurred and eyes appeared to be glossy.

The report states Reschly also appeared to be shaking and confused.

Reschly told authorities her vehicle was in the garage which she allowed them to enter after asking to see it.

Authorities say her white 2018 Ford Explorer matched the description and plate number that caller provided.

Deputies noted damage to the vehicle's passenger side as if it had been side-swiped.

Reschly stated that damage was not new, and when asked if she was willing to go back to the scene of the crash, she said no.

Authorities then told her she would be charged with leaving the scene of a crash and she still refused to return, at which point she was arrested.

On the way to Elkhart County Jail Reschly stated she was in the right lane attempting to go to Gallops when the other driver turned into her and told her it was her fault.

Reschly stated she was going east but when she pointed to what way and what lane she was in, it was in the northbound lanes.

Authorities say she wasn't making sense regarding what happened.

Based on Reschly's behavior, the odor of an alcoholic beverage, and glossy eyes I began asking her about alcohol consumption, to which she stated she last drank alcohol at 9 p.m. the night prior.

Reschly also went on to tell deputies she left the scene of the crash due to police taking too long to arrive. The call came in at 8:17 a.m. and caller said Reschly had left the scene at 8:39 a.m.
