Elkhart drug bust: Police seize 3,000 packages of synthetic marijuana

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department Drug Unit and the Indiana State Excise Police conducted an investigation into the sale of synthetic marijuana-like substances within the city of Elkhart.

Some examples of these products include Spice, K2, Mr. Smiley, and Bath Salts.

Police seized a large amount of these products. Police collected approximately 3,000 individual packages of these substances. Each package contained between one and five grams of product.

The packages all sell between $10 and $20 each. This means the street value of the seized items is estimated between $30,000 and $60,000.

These synthetic cannabinoids contain specific chemical compounds. The product collected will be sent for analysis to verify that the listed chemical compounds are present.

Once the results are obtained from the analysis, all confirmed cases will be sent to the Prosecutor’s Office, requesting charges.

This law went into effect July 1, 2011.

Police say investigations within the city will continue. Officers will continue attempting to find and buy these substances for the purpose of prosecution.

Anyone with any information about synthetic drug activity is encouraged to call the tip line: 389-4777.
