NOW: Elkhart Education Foundation invites community to Summerscape Showcase today

ELKHART, Ind. -- 1st-6th graders from Elkhart Community Schools are still coming to class, even after the start of summer break.

Elementary school students are participating in Summerscape, an educational enrichment camp hosted by the Elkhart Education Foundation.

The goal is to inspire kids to keep their desire to learn, even after school lets out.

Kids learn lessons about things like energy, health and nutrients, animals, etc. Each lesson is paired with a hands-on project in the classroom, and a field trip to somewhere that pertains to the lesson.

The camp also serves breakfast and lunch to the kids, and they're able to sign up to ride the bus if they don't get dropped off.

One group is working with the Elkhart Humane Society to collect donations for animals there.

Today is the last day to bring your donations to Mary Beck Elementary School; you can leave them in the boxes by the bus rider or car rider entrances.

Items needed include canned cat food, cat and dog chow, creamy peanut butter, plastic cat carriers and litter boxes, heavy duty dog toys, hard plastic cat toys and more.

You can stop by Mary Beck Elementary School today from 10-11am to see a sneak peak at what the kids have been working on so far during camp.
