Elkhart Police warning public of phone scam
ELKHART, Ind. – The Elkhart Police Department is warning the public of a scam going around that claims residents have missed court jury duty and have a warrant.
The Department was made aware of this scam on Tuesday after receiving calls and in-person complaints about the incident.
The scam consists of a suspect calling a victim and saying the victim has missed a court or jury duty date and a warrant has been issued. The suspect then says the victim can pay for the warrant by transferring money to a specified account, police said.
The suspects are using information like the address of the Police Department and the names of Elkhart Police officers. Police said the suspects got this information online.
The Elkhart Police Department said they will not contact you by phone and ask you to pay a bill, fine, or for a warrant.
