Exclusive interview with Alexander Mckenzie, son of mother killed by David Lee Mabry
BARODA, Mich - ABC57 just got word that the suspect in Sunday's deadly shooting, 60-year-old David Lee Mabry of Stevensville, died in custody at the Berrien County Jail.
ABC57 News spoke with Alexander McKenzie, whose mother Mary Mabry was shot and killed in her own backyard.
"He's taken the cowardly way out and we're not going to get answers with him now," said Alexander Mckenzie.
Alexander McKenzie confirmed to ABC57 News that his mother, 57-year-old Mary Mabry, was shot and killed by her own stepson, David Lee Mabry, while sitting on her backyard patio on Russell Road in Baroda Township Sunday afternoon.
Alexander McKenzie simply can't believe what's happened.
"Then I woke up to my sister calling me screaming that my mom is dead, so my past 48 hours have been complete hell and I don’t know whether or not I'm still sleeping or what's going on, but this can't be real," said McKenzie.
Alexander also felt betrayed by his own stepbrother.
"I trusted this man, I grew up with him, he was my big brother, I didn’t have any other than my sisters, so I never expected this in a million years," said McKenzie.
Mary Mabry left behind two daughters, Anita and Natasha, who are also dealing with the loss of their mother.
Alexander also spoke to how much his mother meant to him.
“She would make sure that everyone else was sorted before herself, it would make her feel better to know that I had a meal in my belly before herself, or anybody for that matter, just not her own son, my mom cared about everyone,” said McKenzie.
The Berrien County Sheriff's Department confirmed David Mabry was found unresponsive in his jail cell on Tuesday. An autopsy will be performed to determine his cause of death.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help with funeral costs.
