Family finds WWII era grenade in grandpa's basement, bomb squad responds
ABC 57 PAW PAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A Michigan family cleaning out their grandfather's basement found a grenade Saturday afternoon.
The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office notes the grenade was dated to 1945 when the man obtained it.
Authorities say they received the call around 12:20 p.m., Saturday, leading to deputies, along with the Paw Paw Fire Department and Van Buren Emergency Medical Services, to respond to the scene.
Deputies confirmed the item as a grenade but couldn't immediately determine if it was live or not.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Bomb Squad was then called to the scene, at which point they used specialized X-ray equipment to examine the grenade before safely dismantling it without incident.
Further examination found the grenade had been decommissioned.
No injuries or damage resulted from this incident.
The sheriff's office is reminding residents that old military ordnance, ammunition, and other potentially explosive devices can remain dangerous for decades, regardless of their appearance.
If you discover a suspicious item:
- Do not touch, move, or handle the device.
- Do not attempt to open, disassemble, or determine whether it is active.
- Move away from the immediate area and keep others at a safe distance.
- Call 911 so trained personnel can safely evaluate the situation.
