FDA considering cutting sleeping pill dosages

The FDA wants to cut the recommended dosage for Ambien and its generic version in half.

The dosage would change to five milligrams for regular Ambien and 6.25 milligrams for the extended release version.

Sleeping medications are prescribed nearly 40 million times a year.

There are reports of people taking the stronger doses and ending up on the road without knowing how they got there.

Even after patients get the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep, some studies show the drug is still in their systems leaving patients impaired, especially behind the wheel.
