Firefighters: parents and baby forced to jump from Elkhart house fire

ELKHART, Ind. - Firefighters are working a house fire near downtown Elkhart.

It started around 3:30 a.m. in the home on the 1,000 block of South Third Street.

Investigators say a man jumped out of a second-story window to escape the flames. The woman then handed the baby down to the man, then she jumped out.

They have been taken to the hospital to be treated for possible smoke inhalation.

The family says a dog was also inside the house, but they don't know where it is right now.

Investigators say at this point, it looks like the home is a total loss.
