Florida on road to recovery from Tropical Storm Debby

BAKER COUNTY, Fla. -- Florida could face a long road to recovery in the wake of Tropical Storm Debby.

Meteorologists say rainfall reached historic levels in Northeast Florida and the worst may still be far from over.

The National Weather Service says the St. Mary’s River near Jacksonville could continue to rise. Baker County issued a mandatory evacuation order for people living along the river.

The county sheriff said it's the best plan of action for everyone.

“It could be extreme danger for people to stay on the river and not retreat from their homes,” said Sheriff Joey Dobson of Baker County, Florida.  “We certainly don't want to make them leave, but we think it's in their best interest and the safety of their families and themselves to leave the area until this water recedes."

The river is now 12 feet above flood stage.
