Ford settles with government over recall delay

DETROIT — Ford Motor Company has agreed to pay a maximum of $17 million to the federal government.

The payment stems from the company's delay in recalling Ford Escape SUVs for a faulty gas pedal.

In 2012, the car company recalled 421,000 Escapes because the gas pedal could become stuck.

The settlement indicates that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration believes that Ford knew of the problem for some time before alerting the agency and car owners.
