Fort Wayne Tin Caps put an end to the SB Cubs winning streak
SOUTH BEND, Ind -- The South Bend Cubs ended their winning streak tonight, losing to the Fort Wayne Tincaps 9-8.
What happened tonight was honestly way too hot of a start. The cubs went up 7-0 in the bottom of the first thanks to the MVP of the game – first baseman Drew Bowser.
Bowser homered with bases loaded, making it 16 RBIs on the season. Leading in that category are Kane Kepley and Christian Olivo, both tied with 27.
Another highlight of the game was 19-year-old Josiah Hartshorn hitting another home run, now making it ten RBIs in just four games on the team. One could say he's the Cub's newest secret weapon – as he’s just the number eight prospect for Chicago.
Tonight, the Tincaps just kept creeping up and holding South Bend scoreless after the fourth inning.
Fort Wayne scored two in the 4th, two in the 6th, and then three more in the 9th inning.
The Cubs then scrambled their bullpen bringing in right hander Kenyi Perez in hopes of preserving the tied game, but Perez could not get it done.
The Tincaps finished it up with four runs in the 9th inning – sealing the game shut. The Cubs now hold a 28-17 record on the season, but they still lead the series 3-1. Up next they play Fort Wayne Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
Now where do the Cubs stand in terms of playoffs?
The minor leagues are divided into two halves. The first half ends June18, and to clinch a playoff spot a team needs to finish at the top of their division. And so far, the Cubs have been reigning in the Midwest league. So, if they keep their record strong, they'll be good to go.
