'Get Your Garden Started' with free virtual class April 28

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Members of the public are invited to attend "Get Your Garden Started," a virtual class for those interested in growing their own food.

The free 90-minute gardening class is designed for beginners and will take place via Zoom on April 28 at 9 a.m. CST.

The interactive webinar is free, but you must register online ahead of time as spots are limited.

The class, hosted by Beats, Beds, & Browns founder Joe Skibbie, will go over the steps of starting and maintaining a successful garden even with no prior experience.

“Many people want to start gardening but feel overwhelmed by where to begin,” Skibbie says. “This class breaks the process down into simple steps so anyone can start growing their own food with confidence.”

Topics will include:

  • Planning Your Garden – Understanding growing zones, selecting the right location, and designing an effective layout
  • Soil and Planting Basics – Testing and improving soil, choosing seeds, and planting successfully
  • Choosing the Right Location – Evaluating sunlight, soil conditions, and space
  • Watering and Maintenance – Setting up irrigation, managing weeds, and controlling pests
  • Harvesting and Beyond – Knowing when and how to harvest crops
