Governor Whitmer extends temporary suspension of evictions

LANSING, Mich.— Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday signed an Executive Order that temporarily extends protections for tenants and mobile home owners from being evicted from their home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Executive Order 2020-85 allows tenants and mobile home owners to remain in their homes during the pandemic even if they are unable to pay their rent, according to Whitmer’s office.

The order also relieves courts of certain restrictions so that they can postpone eviction-related proceedings until after the pandemic has passed.

“The current states of emergency and disaster would be exacerbated by the additional threats to the public health related to removing or excluding people from their residences during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Executive Order said.

The order’s protections for tenants and mobile home owners will be in effect until June 11, 2020 at 11:59 p.m.
