Here comes basketball season: 2011 Notre Dame Basketball Media Day

NOTRE DAME – The Notre Dame Men and Women’s Basketball Teams had their Media Day on Wednesday. Both teams ended last season in NCAA Tournament.

Head Coach Mike Brey and the men’s team ended the season ranked second in the Big East. The Irish lost to Florida State in the third round of the NCAA Tournament, 71-57.
Coach Brey said on Wednesday he wants to keep post-season play a goal in the coming season.
“I’ve said to our guys, I wonder what it’d be like to cut the nets down in the Garden on Saturday night and then playing deeper in the NCAA tournament getting into that tournament and playing deeper. We’ve gotten to a Sweet Sixteen. We’ve won a first round game and that’s all a psychology of can we be loose and how do you prepare them better. How do I prepare them better to go deeper there,” said Brey.
The women’s team made it all the way to the NCAA National Championship game last year and fell to Texas A&M. On Wednesday, the teams said that’s just motivating them this season.
“We came back motivated. We’re really excited for the season. It’s finally come around we put in a lot of hard work this summer and preseason,” said Devereaux Peters.
Now that they’ve had a taste of championship play they’re ready for more.
“We know what it felt like to win the regional title. We know what it felt like to get to the national championship and win a game in the Final Four. We want to know what it’s like to win a national championship,” said Skylar Diggins.
The Men’s Basketball Team plays its first exhibition game November 1st against St. Xavier, and the season opener is November 12th against Mississippi Valley State.
The Women’s Basketball Team starts play against Windsor in an exhibition game and opens its season at home on November 11th against Akron.
