Hit-and-run driver slams into South Bend apartment building

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – South Bend police are searching for a driver who slammed into an apartment building.

The accident happened around 4:15 Wednesday morning at the 600 block of Laurelwood Court.

According to police, Lakeisha Graham was awaken when a jeep crashed through the bedroom wall into the bed causing brick and glass to crumble right above her headboard.

Graham’s 12-year-old daughter was asleep in the next room and a family member was also staying in the apartment. All three were not injured.

Graham said she feels lucky to be alive.

“It’s nothing but a miracle from God, nothing but the grace of God that I’m alive today,” said Graham. “All of the debris from the accident fell around my bed, if I hadn’t of moved I would have been dead.”

Police are in search of a brown jeep that was seen fleeing from the accident. They believe the crash was intentional and say the driver knew the victim.

Neighbors say there is usually a security officer monitoring and writing down license plate numbers of vehicles coming to and from the apartment complex. The officer was not there at the time of the accident.
