Homeowners allegedly fatally shoot suspect outside residence
VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. – Michigan State Police were dispatched to a larceny complaint. Once arrived, troopers found the larceny suspect fatally shot by the homeowners who initially made the complaint on Sunday, according to troopers.
The scene took place at 42nd Street in Decatur Township at 6:23 a.m.
After an investigation, troopers determined that the homeowners called 911 to report that someone was trying to steal from their property, according to the report.
Before troopers arrived at the scene, the homeowners encountered the suspect outside their home. During this interaction, one of the homeowners shot the suspect, according to troopers.
Lifesaving measures were made by both the homeowner and first responders, but the suspect died at the scene, troopers said.
The suspect was identified as Jeffery Horton, a 28-year-old resident of Decatur, troopers said.
The homeowners’ names have been withheld as this incident is under investigation. No arrests have been made.
Upon completion of the investigation, which will include a lab analysis, a complete report will be sent to the Van Buren County Prosecutor’s office from review, the report said.
