NOW: How much rain will we see this week?

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Indeed, most of the mornings this week it won’t be the heavy coat you’re reaching for but the rain jacket and umbrella with some widespread rain chances across our area.

Hopefully we do have some breaks from the dreariness, but how much rain are we expecting to see?

Through Sunday, we'll likely see at least an inch and a half of rain accumulation, but of course we will likely fluctuate on rainfall amounts. The National Weather Service does have some areas getting closer to the two-inch mark, potentially higher in the next seven days.

NWS briefings also point to a low-level flood risk now, mostly toward the end of the week, though we will hopefully be experiencing light, consistent rain throughout the week.

While most of us won’t be able to enjoy those warm temperatures thanks to the rainy conditions, both are caused by the same phenomenon, the low-level jet, you can see it on the upper-level air chart.

A band of air from the Gulf region, funneling in moisture and warm temperatures directly into Michiana.

This is a pretty dominant flow, like the arctic blasts we saw in January but of course coming from the south.

But the dominant flow means it is going to take a large system to knock it out of place.

We might see that in the middle of next week, with a cold spell in store for us. It’s rain until then, and you can always stay updated on the ABC57 weather app
