Humane Society discourages pets as gifts for holidays

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – The Saint Joseph County Humane Society is discouraging people from buying a pet as a gift for the holiday. Instead, the shelter is offering an alternative option.

The shelter said that if folks are interesting in getting a cat or a dog for a present that they opt for a gift certificate instead.

According to the Humane Society, it is important for people to pick out their own pet rather than have someone pick it for them.

“The holiday season and Christmas Day is so hectic and busy, it’s not the best time to bring a new animal into that type of situation,” said Controller Nancy Deneen.

If the Humane Society finds out that someone wants to adopt a pet as a gift, it may actually deny the application.
