Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan announces expansion plan

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- The Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan, Home of the Yeager Family Pet Shelter (HSSM), announced their plans to expand their presence in the community during their bi-annual auction on Sept.  20.

Officials plan to construct a 6,000 square foot building adjacent to the existing shelter.

Officials say the expansion is part of a long-term strategic plan to guide the organization for the next five to 10 years with collaboration from their board and Brian Saxton, former CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Southwest Michigan.

Officials distributed a questionnaire to identify additional animal care needs, seeking input from the community.

Over 1,000 responses were received, officials say, highlighting items such as animal education, training for pet retention, and a desire for more shot and spay/neuter clinics.

Animal Care Director Robin Lydic described the new facility as an impressive space that will feature several specialty kennels to aid animals in their transition to a new environment upon surrender.

There will also be a new conference room, more storage space, room for group animal training, and extra space that allow pup meet and greets to be more natural and calmer for the dog and prospective adopter.

Lydic emphasized the importance of safeguarding animals from hazardous weather conditions such as extreme heat and cold.

The additional building will allow extra space needed to exercise the animals and keep them and the staff safe and comfortable in a temperature-controlled environment.

According to Board President Ronald Klemm, groundbreaking for the new building will be scheduled in the near future, with an estimated completion date set for summer 2025.
