ILEARN 2023 test scores show a little improvement, but remain low

A new report on test scores in Indiana indicates some improvement, but less than half of all students are meeting basic proficiency standards.

ILEARN tests are taken by students in grades 3-8 and they provide assessments of how kids are doing in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and other studies, depending on the grade level.

Statewide results for ILEARN for the 2022-2023 school year were 40.7 percent at or above proficiency in English Language Arts and for mathematics, 40.9 percent at or above proficiency.

Math scores improved about 1.5 percent over the previous year, but English and Language Arts scores dropped about a half percent.

The Indiana Department of Education says the scores still reflect challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and the interruption in learning for many students.

“We knew that experts were projecting years in recovery time, and yet, the urgency is real, and requires us all to keep our foot on the gas pedal,” said Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner.
