Inmate at SJC jail suffers drug overdose, jail on lockdown during investigation

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Police Department reports the St. Joseph County Jail is on lockdown following the drug overdose of an inmate on Saturday.

Police say around 6 p.m. Saturday, fellow inmates alerted staff to the medical emergency.

Staff located the inmate, a 46-year-old man, experiencing a drug overdose.

Officers and medical staff immediately began life-saving measures.

The man became conscious and was alert when taken to the hospital.

Sheriff Redman stated, “We take the safety and security of our facility seriously. Drugs have no place in our jail, and we will thoroughly investigate how this incident occurred so we can continue strengthening our efforts to keep them out.”

Due to this incident, the jail was put on lockdown and will remain so until the investigation is complete.
