SOUTH BEND, Ind.—The South Bend Common Council took a moment to honor the Indiana University-South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center Director, Darryl Heller, ahead of his extended absence.
Heller will be taking one year off to teach a social justice course at the University of Iowa.
Since taking the job with the Civil Rights Heritage Center in 2015, Heller has been on the front lines fighting for civil rights in South Bend.
“In one sense I didn’t do anything special. The Civil Rights Heritage Center is a natural place for those kinds of conversations, discussions and activities to take place,” Heller said.
Heller will have a farewell event on December 14 at the Heritage Center.
