Jackie Walorski comments on veteran suicide prevention bill

President Barack Obama signed the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act into law Thursday.

The law will help veterans returning from war who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Congresswoman Walorski spoke with ABC 57 News about the importance of the new legislation.

“As we know it today, 22 veterans commit suicide every day, which I find reprehensible in this country. We ask out finest men and women to go fight for liberty and justice, and they never hesitate. We have the finest military in the world, but it shouldn't be when they come back and they need help or mental help with PTSD. It shouldn't be that they can't find it and take their own lives.”

The law will put in place resources for veterans as they return home.

Veterans will have access to a one-stop-shop website with information on how to get help when they need it.

The VA will also work with veterans to connect them to valuable resources in their own town to help with the condition as they adjust back into civilian life.
