Keep an emergency kit in your car for the sub-zero weather

KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. -- Because of the extremely cold weather, the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office says they have been called several times to assist people who were stranded in their cars. The sheriff's department has tips for how you can stay safe in the sub zero temperatures if your car isn't working and you're waiting for help.

"Cars have been breaking down because of the cold weather," said Patrol Sergeant Rick Shepherd of the  Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.



With temperatures dropping everyday, the sheriff's department says that more cars are stranded on the side of the road.



"It is important to keep a safety kit in your car just in case you come across a situation like that," said Shepherd.



Some items you should always keep in the trunk of your car during these cold months are - non perishable food with protein, blankets, a shovel, salt, cat litter, road flares, and an extra gallon of gas.



If you are stranded in the snow, all the white can make it hard to see you. Help people find you. Tie something bright and colorful to the highest point of your car, like your antenna.



Keeping your phone charged up and having a car charger can save you from being completely stranded.



"Depending on where it is stuck and the severity of the conditions, you can always call 9-1-1. We can send an officer to check on them and get any assistance they might need or you can call a local tow company," said Shepherd.



The sheriff's department recommends before hitting the roads to take the time to fill up the gas in your car.



The sheriff's department also asks drivers to keep track of the weather forecast and make sure you give yourself enough time to travel to your destination so you don’t have to rush.
