LaGrange County building first youth center
LAGRANGE, Ind.-- In 2006, LaGrange Communities Youth Centers, Inc was formed in reaction to an increase of juveniles entering the justice system.
LaGrange County lacks a common place for youth and their families to gather, learn, grow and bond-- until now.
Jennifer Martin, LaGrange Communities Youth Centers, Inc board member, says “there will be an indoor soccer field, we will also have a full fitness center in there with a studio for aerobics, a track, indoor soccer field, a full size kitchen so it’s not a small project”
LaGrange County Sheriff's Department Chief Detective, Don Faust, says this center is more than a fun place for LaGrange county youth.
It's to encourage them to take steps in the right direction.
“The trend in the community, especially when it comes to youth is we are losing are youth. We need to provide them with opportunity to encourage good things."
LCYC board member, Jennifer Martin, says it will take the LaGrange community and the support of surrounding neighbors to truly make this a reality for youth who don't have an outlet.
“This is truly a community project. We are going to reach out even to our surrounding counties even up in Michigan because truly we really want to reach out to this are but not only surrounding areas too.”
Their first community fundraiser is a basketball tournament, October 27, where they'll have former NBA and division 1 players including some who have been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
