Lighting strike ruptures natural gas line at apartments

UPDATE: South Haven Area Emergency Services reports residents remain displaced due to the sprinkler system going off.

Crews are currently working to fix the system so people can hopefully go back to their apartments Friday night.

The gas remains off and they found the point of rupture.

Officials say the damage is significant and because the gas line runs to another apartment building it will take a while to repair and turn on.

ORIGINAL STORY: SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. -- South Haven Area Emergency Services reports crews responded to the Park Meadows Apartments in South Haven Township during the thunderstorms around 6 p.m. Thursday.

Residents reported the smell of smoke following a lightning strike.

The lightning appeared to strike one of the six-unit buildings.

Fire officials say there was no fire, but the force of the lighting ruptured a natural gas line and set off the water sprinkler system in one of the apartments.

Residents were safely evacuated and utilities to the building were shut off.
