Local Catholic educators honored at luncheon

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Twenty local catholic educators received "Light of Learning" awards in South Bend.

The luncheon was part of National Catholic Schools Week.

Bishop Kevin Rhodes delivered the keynote address.

Nearly 350 people attended the event including pastors, clergy and school administrators.

It is also National School of Choice Week. The superintendent of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese says School of Choice has affected enrollment.

"Parents, mothers, have shown tremendous gratitude for the opportunity to select their school for their child. We believe this is a social justice issue," said Mark Myers, Superintendant of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese.

Myers says several parents have taken advantage of the Indiana voucher program filling open slots in Catholic schools.
