Local school system selected as part of national initiative to reshape high school education

Portage School of Leaders

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Portage School of Leaders, part of the Career Academy Network of Public Schools, announced it has been selected to participate in the Future of High School Network, a national initiative led by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

A total of 24 school systems were selected to participate by the foundation.

Foundation officials say the initiative is built around a shared vision that high schools should be places where students gain meaningful skills, engage deeply in their learning, and graduate ready to thrive in a changing world.

“We are honored to stand alongside the educators and systems across the country who are daring to create the high school experiences of the future,” said Dr. Andrew Hoyt, Founding Head of School at the Portage School of Leaders. “At the Portage School, we’re showing that when students are invited to engage, learn, and lead in authentic ways, they rise to the occasion.”

The Portage School of Leaders says through this partnership they will explore and elevate new models rooted in competency-based education and improved tools to measure and support student growth.

As a participant, Portage School will also contribute to the foundation’s upcoming National Research and Development Agenda, described as a roadmap outlining research and development priorities that support high-quality high school transformation across the country.

"The Carnegie Unit has become the bedrock currency of the educational economy, defining almost all aspects of schooling and systematically conflating time and learning.” said Dr. Timothy Knowles, President of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. “The insights and partnerships generated by the extraordinary members of this network—in parallel with the priorities outlined in our forthcoming National Research and Development Agenda—will support knowledge building to enable innovation to flourish in high schools everywhere.”
