Man arrested after running around apartment complex with a gun

DOWAGIAC, Mich. -- Dowagiac Police arrested a man who was allegedly running around the Vineyard Place Apartments while carrying a gun. The incident caused Dowagiac Middle School to go on a soft lockdown Wednesday afternoon.

Several people called 9-1-1 around 12:15 about a man running around the complex with a gun. They also reported he drove in a reckless manner in the parking lot when he arrived to the complex.

When officers arrived, they spoke with witnesses who provided a description of the subject.

Officers saw a man matching the description of the suspect and he was detained.

Police say the man learned a domestic altercation involving two other people had happened at the complex earlier in the day. He was at the complex to confront one of the parties to the earlier altercation, police said.

The suspect pulled a gun and chased after one person, reports said.

Police recovered a pellet gun, which looked like a real handgun. They also recovered a rifle they say the suspect brought to the scene, according to reports.

Because the incident happened in close proximity to Dowagiac Middle School, so the school was placed on soft lockdown until the suspect was apprehended.

It was on lockdown for approximately half an hour.

The suspect, a 20-year-old Dowagiac resident, was taken into custody on preliminary charges of felonious assault, brandishing a firearm, and reckless driving. His identity is being withheld pending arraignment.
