ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The judge called it ‘one of the worst things she could imagine’ when sentencing a man for his crime Wednesday in St. Joseph County.
Douglas Wood pleaded guilty to attacking a woman for several hours.
According to court records, Wood was sentenced for aggravated battery, criminal confinement and intimidation as part of his plea deal.
Charging documents allege he restrained, beat, and raped a woman for more than a day, forcing her to agree to marry him.
The judge gave wood the maximum sentence. He will serve 16 years behind bars and will never be allowed to own a firearm.
“Everything’s taken its course. There were some serious charges here. Mr. Wood has taken that step admitting it was wrong, was his fault,” said Arvil Howe, defense attorney.
Wood is no stranger to the courtroom.
He’s faced several charges and convictions since 2010 including acts of violence against women.
