Marcus Freeman calls NC State’s star running back 'a real problem'
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The 16th-ranked Fighting Irish are back at home this weekend, hosting NC State as they chase their fourth straight win and look to climb higher in the AP Poll.
Even though the Wolfpack aren’t ranked, they’re a strong 4-2 team from the ACC with serious weapons on offense. Quarterback C.J. Bailey has thrown for over 1,600 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, while running back Hollywood Smothers ranks second nationally in rushing with 693 yards — averaging nearly seven yards per carry.
Head coach Marcus Freeman made it clear his defense is on high alert:
“Smothers is a real problem. He’s a challenge. He’s really good. He’s got great contact balance; he makes you miss. We have to make sure that we gang tackle Smothers, that we relentlessly pursue the football and we’re physical when we get there.”
Notre Dame knows discipline will be crucial — cleaning up penalties and finishing drives will be key if they want to cover that 22-point spread.
