MDOT to start next phase of work on U.S. 12 and M-51 interchange
NILES, Mich. -- Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the Michigan Department of Transportation will start two road and bridge repair projects Monday in two counties, one of them being Berrien County.
The project includes rebuilding the U.S.12 and M-51 interchange in Niles.
Whitmer lists the next phase of the interchange work as a $27 million investment.
Officials say current work on northbound M-51 includes pavement removal, excavation, base replacement, drainage improvements, curb replacement, sidewalk improvements, concrete patching, and paving.
They add current U.S. 12 work includes paving, restoration, and shoulder construction, to improve safety and the quality of the roadways.
Based on economic modeling, state officials say this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 383 jobs.
MDOT officials say 3rd Street will be closed on the north side of the U.S. 2 intersection, between U.S. 12 and Beeson Road, and no traffic will be permitted from U.S. 12 to northbound 3rd Street, or from southbound 3rd Street to U.S. 12.
Officials estimate work to be completed by Monday, August 19.
The other project starting Monday includes work in Macomb County on M-53 and M-59. It's expected to be completed by late August.
