The crash happened around 6:00 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 20 near 300 east.
Deputies say a grey Scion crossed over the double line, when two of the passengers were changing the radio station.
A white Ford tried to swerve out of the way, but the vehicles hit head-on.
The Dord driver, Kenneth Winquist, 23, is a member of the Indiana National Guard.
He is in South Bend's Memorial Hospital in critical condition.a passenger in the scion, Asia Vannarath, 18, is also in critical condition at Memorial.
Two others in the Scion were also seriously hurt.
