Michigan City man faces charges for 2025 hit-and-run
La Porte County Jail: Gerral Smith MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- A 31-year-old man is in custody for his alleged role in a Sept. 20, 2025, hit-and-run involving a pedestrian in Michigan City.
The Michigan City Police Department reports a 911 call came in around 12:43 a.m. that day regarding a hit-and-and run at the intersection of Grand and Fairfield Avenues.
Police arrived to find a 26-year-old man suffering from life-threatening injuries.
The report states officers on scene began life-saving measures on the man before medical personnel took him to Franciscan Health Hospital for treatment.
Police then learned the suspect drove from the scene prior to police arriving.
An officer with the Traffic Division continued investigating, leading the suspect to be identified as Gerral Smith of Michigan City.
Probable cause was found and an arrest warrant was issued for Smith in November 2025.
Smith was arrested and taken to the La Porte County Jail on Monday, April 13.
Smith is charged with Aggravated Battery, a Level 3 Felony, Leaving the Scene of Crash-Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a Level 6 Felony, Driving While Suspended-Prior Conviction, a Class A-Misdemeanor.
Smith was given a $25,000 cash bond.
