Michigan Gov. Whitmer announces art and writing contests for State of the State
2025\'s State of the State Art Contest Winner: Erin Kawata, 8th grade, Ann Arbor. LANSING, Mich. -- On Thursday, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced there will be an art contest this year for the State of the State program cover and a writing contest for a chance to be included in the address.
“Michigan is growing as we continue working together to create good-paying jobs, fix our roads, support our small businesses, and invest in our students and schools,” said Whitmer. “The proposals I will share in this year’s State of the State address will build on the progress we’ve made and move Michigan forward. Underpinning all of that is our love for the incredible state we call home, and the people, places, and communities that make it great. That’s why I’m challenging our youngest Michiganders to get involved and share what they love most about Michigan!”
Whitmer is challenging the Mitten State's K through 12 students to create a design for the program cover utilizing the theme, “Michigan’s Bright Future,” and answering the question, “What does Michigan’s bright future look like to you?”.
Students may use a variety of mediums including crayons, markers, paints, or any other materials.
Students may then submit their designs on the state's website by following the instructions.
Besides the art contest, the Whitmer is asking young Michiganders to write their best short story or essay answering the question: “What do you love most about Michigan?”.
State officials say the winning student’s story or essay will be featured as part of the State of the State Address on Feb. 25.
Students may submit their writing by following the instructions online.
Submissions for both contests will be accepted exclusively through the online system and must be received no later than 11:59 p.m., Feb. 15.
