NOW: Michigan man charged for terrorist threat against Gov. Whitmer

LANSING, Mich. -- A 36-year-old Michigan prisoner is facing charges of making a False Report or Threat of Terrorism after he sent a letter to Michigan President Gretchen Whitmer saying he planned to bomb her home once her was released.

Jihaad Ahmad is currently incarcerated in the Michigan Department of Corrections and was arraigned on Monday in Lansing’s 54-A District Court on the new charges.

"The State alleges that in response to being denied parole, Ahmad sent a letter to Governor Whitmer’s office in May of 2024, where he threatened the Governor’s life and to bomb her residence when he was released from prison. Michigan State Police was provided the letter for investigation," the Michigan Attorney General's Office said.

If found guilty, Ahmad could face up to 20 years incarceration and/or up to a $20,000 fine.

“Violence and violent rhetoric directed at elected officials pose significant threats to not only them but our democracy as a whole,” Michigan AG Dana Nessel said. “My department is committed to prosecuting this offense to the fullest extent of the law.”

Ahmad's next court date is Nov. 14.
