Michigan man pleads guilty to burning American flags

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A Michigan man has plead guilty to burning Americans flags as a form of protest.

William Howerton said he was full of rage when you burned some American flags near Grand Rapids.

He pleaded guilty to arson.

Investigators say he was mad at the federal government.

Police were called and were told a man was burning a flag at the Veteran's Memorial in Hudsonville. And while they investigated that, similar calls came in from another location.

"I chose to take it out on a symbol of America. That was a bad idea. I should have found other ways to protest or complain or whatever," Howerton said.

Howerton believed the government was responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

Authorities only charged him for two flag burnings.

But police say Howerton maybe responsible for eight others over the past year.
