Mishawaka Police Department Officers rescue a man from fire

ABC 57

MISHAWKA, Ind. -- Early morning on April 19, around 7:34 a.m., Mishawaka Police Department officers were dispatched to assist the Mishawaka Fire Department.

A resident of an apartment complex in the 700 block of Liberty called 911 reporting that his apartment was on fire. PFC Richard Freeman and PFC Rachel Corona were the officers on scene, arriving within minutes and before the fire department, locating the apartment and verifying the fire.

With no regard to their own safety, they both entered the apartment and located the 68-year-old resident, who was seated on the couch in the living room and unable to get out on his own due to a recent hospitalization. There was an active fire on the floor and at least one of the interior walls, and the residents clothing was also burned.

Freeman and Corona were able to pick the male up and carry him out of the apartment and get a safe distance away.

The fire department did arrive on scene shortly thereafter and extinguished the rest of the fire.  They also then provided emergency medical treatment to the resident before being sent to the hospital for further treatment.
