Elkhart mom accused of killing her baby girl
ELKHART, Ind. - An Elkhart mom was arrested on suspicion of murder and neglect of a dependent in connection with the death of her six-month-old daughter.
On July 7, Elkhart emergency crews were called to a house on Middlebury Street for a report of a six-month-old who was unconscious and not breathing.
The baby was taken to the hospital but died the next day.
During the investigation, the Elkhart County Homicide Unit found multiple visible injuries on the baby’s body. The autopsy determined her cause of death was homicide.
The child’s mom, 24-year-old Alauraeve Allen, allegedly told police she had left the baby in the care of friends on July 8 and that when she came home, the baby vomited on her and then wasn’t breathing, according to reports.
In an interview a few days later, Allen allegedly admitted to shaking the baby on July 6 because she was angry with her.
She also said she’s hit the baby before, police said.
After Allen shook the baby, she noticed her vomiting and getting cold but did not get her medical help, reports said.
Allen said she has researched “shaken baby syndrome” before and knew a consequence of shaking a baby was death, according to reports.
She is being held without bond.
