One dead, one injured following semi vs. vehicle collision on County Road 18

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Deputies responded to reports of a semi vs. vehicle collision on Thursday at 9:02 p.m. on County Road 18, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office.

The vehicles involved included a 2008 Nissan Altima and a 2019 Peterbilt Semi.

The Nissan was driven by a 20-year-old man from Elkhart, and contained one passenger, a 17-year-old girl. 

A 62-year-old man from Elkhart was driving the semi at the time of the crash.

According to investigating officials, the Nissan was traveling westbound on County Road 18, while the semi was traveling eastbound on County Road 18.

The driver of the Nissan lost control of the vehicle on the icy roads and slid into the eastbound lanes, colliding with the semi, according to deputies.

Both the driver and the passenger in the Nissan were transported by ambulance to Elkhart General Hospital.

The driver suffered from injuries to his head and chest, while the 17-year-old dealt with injuries to her head and pelvis.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office identified Breannia Papet as the 17-year-old involved in the crash.

Officials reported that Papet had succumbed to her injuries while at Elkhart General Hospital at 12:55 a.m.

Deputies confirmed that all people involved were wearing seatbelts.
