Murder suspect Nicholas Stanley back in court with new attorney, court order changes defense strategy

Elkhart County Jail: Nicholas Stanley

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Nicholas Stanley, suspected of murdering convicted sex offender Allen Cogswell in June 2025, was back in court Thursday and ABC57's Annie Kate was in attendance to gather updates.

Stanley says Cogswell abused one of his younger family members and requested more time to craft a defense ahead of his Sept. 21 trial. The judge denied the request, maintaining the trial date as is.

In court Thursday, ABC57's Annie Kate also learned Stanley has a new attorney, Vincent Campiti, who replaced Chief Deputy Public Defender Bridgette Faulkner, with approval by Elkhart County Superior Court Judge Michael Cristofeno,

Campiti said he's representing Stanley pro bono.

Campiti filed into the case on Wednesday and was the one who filed a motion to continue or postpone the trial.

On Aug. 10, a court order from Judge Cristofeno blocked Cogswell’s prior conviction from being used as evidence, thus destroying any foundation for a possible “sudden heat” defense.
